Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about your visit
Practice & Specialist
Yes. Omega Veterinary Group is the only board-certified veterinary dental practice operating within the San Francisco city limits. Led by Dr. Colin Dick, our clinic is located in the heart of the Inner Sunset at 1333 9th Ave. We provide world-class oral surgery and diagnostics right here in the city, Monday through Thursday, from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. We also offer a private parking lot for our clients.
A board-certified specialist, also known as a Diplomate, has completed years of intensive training beyond veterinary school specifically in dentistry and oral surgery. Dr. Colin is a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College (DAVDC). This is a credential that represents the highest level of expertise in the field and is currently held by fewer than 300 veterinarians worldwide.
A formal referral is not strictly required. While many of our patients are referred by their primary care veterinarians, pet owners are welcome to book a consultation with us directly. We will coordinate with your primary clinic to obtain your pet’s recent medical records and blood work results prior to your visit.
While we are San Francisco’s premier dental specialty practice, we also offer specialist surgical support through Dr. Kim Tong. He specializes in complex orthopedic and soft tissue procedures. Dr. Kim is available to travel to partner clinics throughout the Bay Area, but he also performs consultations and surgeries right here at our San Francisco facility. Whether you have been referred by your vet or are seeking a specialist’s opinion on your own, we can accommodate your pet’s surgical needs at our clinic.
Anesthesia & Safety
We understand that anesthesia is the primary concern for owners of senior pets, and we do not take that concern lightly. While we often hear that “age is not a disease,” we recognize that older pets require a more tailored approach. We use advanced 3D imaging to keep our surgery times as short as possible, and we offer the optional on-site support of a Board-Certified Anesthesiologist for our most complex or high-risk cases. Our goal is to make every procedure as brief, precise, and safe as possible.
Safety is our absolute priority. For our most vulnerable patients, we offer the advanced support of a Board-Certified Veterinary Anesthesiologist who can be requested to work on-site at our clinic. This specialist provides a tailored anesthesia protocol and one-on-one management for your pet from start to finish. Please let us know during your consultation if you would like to discuss this service.
Thorough veterinary dentistry involves more than just a surface cleaning. Full-mouth X-rays, cleaning beneath the gumline, and precise surgical procedures cannot be performed safely or accurately on an awake pet. Anesthesia ensures your pet is free from pain and stress throughout the treatment, allowing Dr. Colin to perform his work with the necessary precision.
We find that most pets bounce back very quickly. Most are ready to go home the same day and enjoy a light dinner that evening. On the rare occasion that a patient requires specialized overnight monitoring, we provide seamless continued care at our affiliate hospital in San Mateo. We handle all transportation and coordination to ensure the same high standards of care continue through the night.
Appointments & Logistics
Your initial visit is a comprehensive oral health assessment. Dr. Colin will perform a visual exam, review your pet’s history and records, and discuss his findings with you in detail. We will then provide a customized treatment plan and a written cost estimate for any recommended procedures. You will leave with a clear understanding of your pet’s health and what your options are.
If a same-day procedure was discussed with you at the time of booking, it is essential that your pet arrives fasted. Even if a same-day treatment was not explicitly planned, some clients choose to fast their pet “just in case.” If the consultation reveals an issue that requires immediate attention, having your pet already fasted provides the flexibility to move forward that afternoon. If you do not intend to have a procedure performed on the day of the consultation, no fasting is required.
Costs vary based on the amount of treatment time required and the complexity of the case. We provide a transparent, written estimate following your initial specialist consultation so that you can make an informed decision for your pet.
We accept all major credit cards, as well as CareCredit and Scratchpay to provide flexible monthly payment options. While we do not bill insurance companies directly, we provide all the itemized receipts and medical notes necessary for you to submit a claim for reimbursement to your provider.
